As adjective < classical Latin Albānus of or relating to Alba Longa < Alba , more fully Alba Longa , literally ‘long Alba’, the name of a city of ancient Latium reputedly founded by Aeneas's son Ascanius (Virgil Aeneid 3. 390 f.) + -ānus -an suffix.With Alban lake (see quot. 1635 at sense B. 2) compare classical Latin lacus Albānus.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French albane.
Etymology: < French albane (A. Payen 1852, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 35 118) < classical Latin albus white (see album n.2) + French -ane -an suffix. With the form alban compare German Alban (1854 or earlier).
Chemistry. Now rare.
A white crystalline resinous substance (or mixture of substances) present in natural gutta-percha latex.
