Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian albanese.
Etymology: < Italian albanese, adjective (1508) < post-classical Latin Albanensis (1166), variant of Arbanensis (1166) < Arbanum , the name of a region of north-central Albania (1204) or its etymon medieval Greek Ἄρβανον (c1140: see Albanian n.2 and adj.3) + post-classical Latin -ensis -ese suffix; compare also post-classical Latin Albanescus , adjective (1285). Compare Albanian n.2, Albanian adj.3With the form Albanees (plural) in use as noun perhaps compare -ee suffix1. In quot. 1590 for Albanese-wise adv. at Derivatives the metre shows that the first element Albanese was pronounced with four syllables, after the Italian.
