Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening; perhaps partly modelled on a French lexical item, and perhaps partly modelled on a German lexical item Etymons: English condylome , condyloma n., sclerome , scleroma n., rhizome n.
Etymology: < -ome (in e.g. condylome, variant of condyloma n., sclerome, variant of scleroma n., rhizome n., etc., alterations of earlier forms in -oma comb. form), perhaps partly after French -ome, German -om -oma comb. form. In sense 3 originally after mitome n., but now especially after genome n.Productive from the last quarter of the 19th cent.
