-onsuffix2

Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: argon n.
Etymology: < -on (in argon n.; other names of noble gases from the neuter singular of Greek adjectives (e.g. krypton n., xenon n.) are probably after this). Productive in early 20th cent. in niton n.; compare also radon n., thoron n. (both < German).

-onsuffix3

Primary stress is generally retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: -one suffix.
Etymology: Variant of -one suffix, originally varying with it somewhat arbitrarily (compare margarone n., mellon n.), in the names of substances not conforming to the later systematic use of -one suffix. In early use, the spelling -on in English often reflects the influence of German forms in -on , as distinct from equivalent French forms in -one (compare cupferron n.). After -one suffix had developed a systematic use for the names of ketones and analogous compounds, -on continued to appear in the names of a more miscellaneous range of substances; in the names of pesticides, perhaps after malathion n.
