A device that improves the signal-to-noise ratio of reproduced or transmitted sound by compressing the range of amplitudes of the signal before transmission, and then expanding it on reproduction or reception; = compandor n.The principle is described in E. I. Green U.S. Patent 1,738,000 (1929).
