Etymology: < post-classical Latin compotista, computista calculator, chronologer (9th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources), clerk of accounts (15th cent. in a British source) < computus computus n. + classical Latin -ista -ist suffix. Compare Anglo-Norman compotistien , cumpotestien (12th cent.), Middle French compotiste (14th cent.), French computiste (1611), Italian computista (1494). Compare compute n.
