Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French alichon.
Etymology: < French alichon paddle of a waterwheel, cog of a cogwheel (both 1676; also in Old French as halichon (13th cent.)) < classical Latin āla + French -ichon , suffix forming diminutives. Compare (with a variant of the suffix) Middle French alleuchon cog of a cogwheel used in a mill (1425; French alluchon ). Compare also (with other diminutive suffixes) Middle French (Liège) allette paddle of a waterwheel (1441; specific use of alette small wing: see ailette n.), aileron paddle of a waterwheel (1676; specific use of aileron extremity of a bird's wing: see aileron n.).
Obsolete. rare.
