Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek -ωψ.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -ωψ, combining form (in e.g. μύωψ (see myops n.), νυκτάλωψ nyctalops n.) of ὤπ- , ὤψ eye, face (recorded only in oblique cases) < a lengthened grade of the stem of ὀπ- , ὄψ eye, face (see optic adj.). Compare classical Latin -ōps.Combining with first elements of Greek origin. Attested in loans from Greek or Latin from the 16th cent.; formations within English are found from the 19th cent.
