Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing froim Latin. Etymons: concelebrate v., -ion suffix1; Latin concelebration-, concelebratio.
Etymology: In sense 1 < concelebrate v. + -ion suffix1, after celebration n.; compare post-classical Latin concelebratio action of honouring someone (15th cent.). In sense 2 < post-classical Latin concelebration-, concelebratio joint celebration of mass (frequently from 1594 or earlier) < concelebrat- , past participial stem of concelebrare concelebrate v. + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1; compare Italian concelebrazione (1744 or earlier) and later concelebrate v. 3.

2. Christian Church. Esp. in the Roman Catholic Church: the joint celebration of mass by two or more priests; an instance of this.The practice of concelebration was formerly rare, except at ordinations when the newly ordained priests would officiate with the bishop. In 1963, the ‘Constitution on the Liturgy’ of the Second Vatican Council restored the practice of concelebration in the Western Church, and it is now widespread, esp. in religious communities and when priests officiate alongside a bishop at a special mass.
