单词 amort
释义

amortadj.

Brit. /əˈmɔːt/, U.S. /əˈmɔrt/
Forms: 1500s amorte, 1600s 1800s– amort.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: French a mort ; à la mort adv.
Etymology: Either (i) < Middle French a mort (French à mort ) to death, mortally (c1100 in Old French in a mort feru stabbed to death), to despair (1340 in mettre a mort to drive (a person) to despair) ( < a to (see a- prefix5) + mort death: see mort n.1; compare amortir to put to death), or perhaps (ii) shortened < à la mort adv. Compare later à la mort adj. and all amort adj.
Now rare (chiefly archaic and poetic in later use).
In predicative use: full of sorrow, in despair, utterly dejected; (also) †dead, lifeless; on the point of death (obsolete). Cf. à la mort adv.
