Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: amortize v., -ment suffix; French amortisement.
Etymology: Partly (i) < amortize v. + -ment suffix, and partly (ii) < Anglo-Norman amortisement, amorteisement, Anglo-Norman and Middle French amortissement alienation in mortmain (13th cent. in Old French; French amortissement ), < Anglo-Norman amortiser and its apparent etymon Anglo-Norman and Middle French amortiss- , extended stem of amortir (see amortize v.) + -ment -ment suffix. Compare slightly earlier amortizing n.Compare post-classical Latin admortisamentum, admortizamentum, amortisamentum, amortizamentum alienation in mortmain (from 14th cent. in British and continental sources).
Law. Now rare (historical in later use).
A transfer of property to an ecclesiastical or other corporation in mortmain (mortmain n. 1). Cf. amortization n. 1.
