单词 complaisant
释义

complaisantadj.

Brit. /kəmˈpleɪznt/, /ˌkɒmpleɪˈzɑːnt/, U.S. /kəmˈpleɪs(ə)nt/, /kəmˈpleɪz(ə)nt/
Forms: Also 1600s complizant, compleasant, 1700s complisant.
Etymology: 17th cent. < French complaisant (16th cent. in Littré), present participle of complaire to acquiesce in order to please < Latin complacēre to be very pleasing to: compare complacent adj., complease v. In 17th cent. it was sometimes assimilated in form to complease, pleasant, with stress on 2nd syllable; but a general recognition of its French nativity has preserved the French spelling. Walker c1800 has /kɒmpliːˈzænt/.
