Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin conceptualis ; concept n., -ual suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin conceptualis (1648 in the passages translated in quots. 16621 and 16622 at sense 1) < classical Latin conceptus conceptus n. (u -stem) + -ālis -al suffix1; compare earlier conceptualiter , adverb (see conceptually adv.). In later use re-formed < concept n. + -ual suffix, after e.g. spiritual adj. With the use in sense 2, compare French conceptuel (1764 or earlier), and slightly earlier conceptualism n., conceptualist n.
1. Probably: that is conceived in the mind. Obsolete. rare.Only in J. Chandler's translations of van Helmont's writings.
