Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: concept n., intellectualist n., ritualist n.
Etymology: Probably < concept n. + -ualist (in e.g. intellectualist n., ritualist n., etc.), perhaps after French conceptualiste (1751 or earlier as noun, 1838 or earlier as adjective). Compare German †Conceptualist (1786 or earlier; now Konzeptualist ). Compare conceptual adj. (which is first attested later in the sense relevant to sense A. 1) and the foreign-language parallels cited at that entry, and compare also conceptualism n.Compare post-classical Latin Conceptistae (plural noun):1481 P.
