单词 ampelite
释义

ampeliten.

Brit. /ˈampəlʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈæmpəˌlaɪt/
Forms:

α. 1600s– ampelitis (now historical).

β. 1600s– ampelite.

γ. 1600s–1700s amphelites.

δ. 1800s– amphelite.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ampelītis.
Etymology: < classical Latin ampelītis bituminous earth used to preserve vines from insects (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀμπελῖτις of the vine (in ἀμπελῖτις γῆ , lit. ‘earth of the vine’, a bituminous earth sprinkled on the vine to destroy insects) < ancient Greek ἄμπελος vine (see ampelography n.) + -ῖτις -ite suffix1.Compare French ampélitis , noun (1562), French ampélite (1611 in Cotgrave as adjective in sense ‘bituminous’, in terre ampélite ; 1723 as noun), Italian ampelite (1598 in Florio). Specific forms. With the β. and δ. forms compare -ite suffix1. The γ. and δ. forms perhaps show alteration after English words ultimately of Greek origin in amphi- prefix.
Mineralogy.
Originally: a kind of bituminous earth described by Pliny, said to have been used as a soil dressing and as a cosmetic (now historical). In later use usually: any of various kinds of carbonaceous clay or oil shale.
