Etymology: < Italian concerto grosso concerto where a small group of solo instruments performs against the full orchestra (1714 or earlier), lit. ‘big concerto’ < concerto concerto n. + grosso gross adj.Sense 1 appears to reflect a misapprehension of the Italian term, which is not attested in this sense. In plural form concerti grossi after the Italian plural form. O.E.D. (1989) also gives the non-naturalized pronunciation /konˈtʃɛrto ˈɡrosso/.
