Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Anthomedusae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Anthomedusae, group name ( Haeckel Das System der Medusen (1879) 11: see note) < antho- antho- comb. form + Medusae , plural of Medusa , former genus name (see Medusa n.), apparently so called on account of the resemblance of some forms to flowers.Haeckel apparently used the German form of the group name sightly earlier: Anthomedusen, plural (1879, in Sitzungsber. der Jenaischen Ges. f. Med. u. Naturwissensch.: Suppl. zur Zeitschr. f. Naturwissensch. 12 p. cv, reporting a meeting in December 1878).

With plural agreement. An order of hydroid coelenterates (class Hydrozoa) having a polyp stage that lacks a perisarc and a free-living medusa stage typically having a simple bell shape with the gonads situated primarily on the manubrium; (also) medusae of this type.
