单词 anthony over
释义

Anthony overn.

Brit. /ˈantənɪ ˌəʊvə/, U.S. /ˈæntəni ˌoʊvər/, /ˈænθəni ˌoʊvər/
Forms: 1800s– Anthony over, 1800s– Ant'ny over, 1800s– Antony over, 1900s– Antny over.
Origin: Apparently from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Anthony , over adv.
Etymology: Apparently < the male forename Anthony (although the semantic motivation is unclear; see Anthony n.) + over adv.The words in the name of the game form part of a call and response in some forms of the game, but evidence for this is first recorded later. See, for example, quot. 1882. The name of the game is also attested from the end of the 19th cent. onwards in a large number of other forms, many of which show folk-etymological reanalysis of the first element, e.g. Ante over, Anti-over, Anti-i-over; Andy-over, Andrew over; Aunty over; Annie over; Anti-Annie-over. See further Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. at Andy-over, Annie-over, anti-i-over, anti-over, Andrew-over, ankety-over.
Chiefly U.S. Now chiefly historical.
A game in which one group of children throws a ball over a building for another group to catch, the successful catching player then running around the building to tag one or more members of the throwing team, who must then join the catching side.
