Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: antho- comb. form, -phile comb. form.
Etymology: < antho- comb. form + -phile comb. form, after French anthophile noun (1750 or earlier in general use; 1804 or earlier in taxonomic context), adjective (1812 or earlier). Compare scientific Latin Anthophila, group name (1809 or earlier, apparently after French).
Chiefly Entomology.
An insect which is typically found on flowers, or which feeds from flowers. Sometimes also: a person who loves flowers.
