Etymology: < German Anthophyllit ( C. F. Schumacher Versuch eines Verzeichnisses der in den Dänisch-Nordischen Staaten sich findenden einfachen Mineralien (1801) 96) < post-classical Latin anthophyllum clove (1541 or earlier; < antho- antho- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf: see phyllo- comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹. The mineral is so called on account of its colour, likened to that of the clove-pink (see clove-pink n. at clove n.² Compounds). Compare French anthophyllite (1804 or earlier). Compare antholite n.In form anthophyllite with remodelling of the ending after -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A purplish- or yellowish-brown ferromagnesian silicate mineral of the amphibole group which occurs as fibrous or lamellar masses, esp. in metamorphic rocks.Chemical formula: (Mg, Fe)₇Si₈O₂₂(OH)₂. Crystal system: orthorhombic.
