Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < ancient Greek ἄνθραξ charcoal (see anthrax n.) + -iferous comb. form, after French anthraxifère (1828 or earlier), and partly (in β. forms) < anthrac- (in anthracite n.) + -iferous comb. form, after French anthracifère (1822 or earlier).

Geology. Now rare.
