Etymology: < anthraco- comb. form + -mancy comb. form, perhaps after French (rare) anthracomancie (1823 or earlier).French anthracomancie is attested in a glossary giving the names of various kinds of divination (largely based on chapter xxv. of Rabelais's Tiers livre (1552)), which forms an appendix to an edition of Rabelais's Complete Works. However, the term does not occur in the text of Rabelais.
