Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Anthracosaurus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Anthracosaurus, genus name (T. H. Huxley 1863, in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 19 56) < anthraco- anthraco- comb. form + -saurus -saur comb. form, with allusion to the finding of the remains in coal measures, the animal having been supposed to be a reptile.

Palaeontology.

An extinct reptile-like labyrinthodont amphibian of the genus Anthracosaurus, found in late Carboniferous deposits in the British Isles; (also) the genus itself. Cf. anthracosaur n.
