Etymology: < scientific Latin anthracotherium, genus name ( Cuvier Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles (1822) III. 396) < anthraco- anthraco- comb. form + -therium (in e.g. Megatherium megatherium n.), in allusion to the finding of its remains in lignite (brown coal) deposits.

Palaeontology.

A large extinct ungulate artiodactyl mammal of the genus Anthracotherium (family Anthracotheriidae) or the group including this genus, known from fossil remains in Tertiary deposits, esp. of lignite. Also (in form Anthracotherium): the genus itself. Cf. anthracothere n.
