Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Anthracoxen.
Etymology: < German Anthracoxen (attributed to A. E. Reuss by T. Laurentz 1856, in Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserl. Akad. der Wissensch. Wien: Math.-Naturw. Classe 21 275) < anthraco- anthraco- comb. form + ancient Greek ξένος stranger, guest (see xeno- comb. form). The substance was so called by Reuss in allusion to its occurrence as a foreign substance in coal. N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciation as (æ·nþrăkǫksī:n) /ˈænθrəkɒkˌsiːn/.
Mineralogy. Obsolete.
A variety of fossil resin or retinite occurring in coal deposits.
