Primary stress is usually attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. muciparous adj.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin -parus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin -parus bearing, producing (in e.g. ōviparus (see oviparous adj.); < parere to produce, bring forth: see parent n.) + -ous suffix. Compare French -pare.Earliest in loanwords from classical Latin and post-classical Latin, e.g. multiparous adj., oviparous adj. (mid-17th cent.). At the same period the first formations in English with first elements of Latin origin are attested, e.g. uniparous adj., vermiparous adj. Most later formations also have first elements of Latin or Greek origin. Formations are moderately common in the 19th cent. and continue in the 20th, e.g. iteroparous adj., semelparous adj.

2. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘producing, secreting, or bearing’ things of the kind or in the manner denoted by the first element.
