Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French agreement, agrément (French agrément ) arrangement agreed between two or more parties, acceptance, acknowledgement, satisfaction or fulfilment of an obligation (all 1st half of the 14th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman), action or fact of agreeing, consent, contentment or satisfaction (2nd half of the 15th cent.), (in plural) ornamental household accessories (1502–3), gracious manners or behaviour (1676) < agréer agree v. + -ment -ment suffix. Compare post-classical Latin aggreamentum, agreamentum assent, covenant, settlement (frequently from 1425 in British sources; < French).With use in the plural in sense 7 compare similar use of agreeable n. 1; compare also agrément n. 1, a later reborrowing of the French word in this sense.
