Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin contemporalis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin contemporalis contemporary (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin con- con- prefix + tempor- , tempus time (see tempo n.1) + -ālis -al suffix1; compare temporālis belonging to time (see temporal adj.1). Compare earlier contemporan adj., contemporanean adj., contemporary adj.Compare Middle French contemporel (15th cent.; rare). The β. forms show remodelling after co- prefix.
Occurring or existing during the same period of time as another event, person, etc.; occurring or existing together in time. Also with with.In quot. 1621, contemporal could be interpreted as a noun.
