Etymology: < post-classical Latin contemptus mundi (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome and Augustine) < classical Latin contemptus contempt n. + mundī , genitive of mundus world (see mundane adj.).
Disregard of or disdain for worldly or temporal concerns.Contemptus mundi is a prevalent theme in the literary and philosophical tradition of classical antiquity, and of early and medieval Christianity.
