Etymology: < conscient adj. + -ize suffix, after Portuguese conscientizar to make aware (1936 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier conscientization n.
transitive. Originally in Latin America: to make (a person, group, etc.) aware of social and political conditions, esp. as a precursor to challenging inequalities of treatment or opportunity. Cf. conscientization n.
