单词 cook fish
释义

cook fishn.

Forms: 1600s cooke fish, 1600s 1800s–1900s cook fish.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cook n.2, fish n.1
Etymology: Probably < cook n.2 (although this is first attested later) + fish n.1Apparently originating in a misapprehension of cook n.2 (which denotes the cuckoo wrasse; compare sense 2) as showing cook n.1 or cook v.1, and hence applied to the related brown wrasse (popular as a food and game fish); compare the folk etymology reported in quot. 1655 at sense 1. Earlier currency in sense 2 (as well as apparent confusion between the two fish) is probably either implied or shown by the following example of cock fish (which should perhaps be regarded as a genuine variant):1688 R. Holme Acad. Armory ii. xiv. 332/1 A Sea Merle, or Cock Fish; so called from the colour of a Bird named so;..yet the Bird is black; but the Fish is of a deep Violet.
