Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French conservacie; Latin conservatia, cōnservātio.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French conservacie (1384) and its etymon post-classical Latin conservatia (from 14th cent. in British sources), alteration (with suffix substitution; compare -y suffix3) of classical Latin cōnservātio conservation n.: see -acy suffix. Compare later conservancy n.
Now rare.
Preservation under law; conservation, protection. Cf. conservancy n.
