Etymology: < post-classical Latin albation-, albatio action or process of whitening (from 14th cent. in British and continental sources; 1612 or earlier in alchemical contexts) < albat- , past participial stem of albare to whiten (6th cent.; < classical Latin albus white: see album n.2) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. With sense 2 compare French albation (late 18th cent.) and earlier albification n., dealbation n.
1. The removal of dust or similar matter from an object; dusting. Obsolete.
