albeitconj.Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: all conj., be v., it pron. Etymology: < all conj. + be , present subjunctive of be v. + it pron., originally as a phrase in which be was inflected for tense (see all were it at all adj., pron., n., adv., and conj. Phrases 12c), subsequently lexicalized as a conjunction with reference to the past as well as the present. Compare albe conj., all be it so at all adj., pron., n., adv., and conj. Phrases 12b.The β. forms (in sense 1c) probably arose by reduction of the α. forms following lexicalization of the phrase, perhaps reinforced by folk-etymological association with but conj. With albeit though (see 1c) compare although conj. With albeit if compare all if at all adj., pron., n., adv., and conj. Phrases 13a. 1.
