Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin contrōversus , -ed suffix1; controverse v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin contrōversus controversial, debatable, disputed ( < contrō , variant (compare Oscan contrud ) of contrā contra prep. + versus verse adj.) + -ed suffix1. In later use also partly < controverse v. + -ed suffix1. Compare later controverse n.
Now somewhat rare.
Made the subject of controversy; called into question; disputed, controverted.
