Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin albication-, albicatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin albication-, albicatio (1554 or earlier; 1877 or earlier in specific botanical sense) < classical Latin albicāt- , past participial stem of albicāre to be white ( < albus white (see album n.2) + -icāre , verbal suffix) + -iō -ion suffix1.
Chiefly Botany. Now rare.
The process of growing white; esp. the development of white or light patches, spots, streaks, bands, etc., in the foliage of plants, either as a natural process of variegation, or as a symptom of disease or disorder.
