Etymology: < Spanish albóndigas, plural of albóndiga meatball (c1406) < Spanish Arabic al-bunduqa < Arabic al the + Spanish Arabic bunduqa meatball, specific sense development (with reference to the round form) of Arabic bunduqa hazelnut, singular form corresponding to bunduq hazelnuts collectively (compare bundook n.).
In Spanish and Latin American cookery: small, spicy meatballs, typically served in a soup or with a tomato sauce; a dish of this. Also attributive (frequently in singular), as albondiga soup.
