Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French albugeneux; Latin albuginosus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French albugeneux, albigineux, Middle French, French albugineux (1377 apparently as noun, denoting the aqueous humour of the eye; 1503 in humeur albigineux ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin albuginosus jaundiced (4th cent.), suffering from the eye disease albugo (1536 or earlier), designating a humour of the eye (1545 or earlier) < classical Latin albūgin- , albūgō albugo n. + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare later albugineous adj.Post-classical Latin albuginosus is much less common than albugineus (see albugineous adj.).
Obsolete.
1. Chiefly Medicine. Resembling the white of an egg; albuminous; = albugineous adj. 1. Also: designating the white of an egg.
