单词 coonass
释义

coonassn.adj.

Brit. /ˈkuːnas/, U.S. /ˈkuˌnæs/
Forms: 1900s– coon ass, 1900s– coon-ass, 1900s– coonass. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain and disputed.Several theories about the origin of coonass have been posited, but none is proven. Many commentators suggest a derivation < coon n.1 + ass n.2 Some claim coon is used in the sense raccoon (coon n.1 1a), either on account of the wearing of raccoon-skin caps by 19th-cent. soldiers from the region, or because of the occasional use of raccoon meat in Cajun cooking. Others consider a more likely origin is the derogatory racial epithet (coon n.2 1). An alternative etymology is from French conasse, connasse the female genitals (1610), derogatory epithet for a person (c1810; < con (15th cent. in Middle French; < classical Latin cunnus : see cunnilingus n.) + -asse, augmentative suffix). Given the number of Francophones in the region, a French origin or influence seems plausible; if so, the word form suggests that folk-etymological remodelling after coon n.1 is still likely. A related theory, widely publicized by Louisiana politician James Domengeaux (1907–88), that the word entered English via American soldiers stationed in France during World War II seems implausible, since coonass is now known to have been used in the United States before its troops were sent to Europe. For a fuller summary of theories about the origin of coonass, see S. K. Bernard Cajuns (2003) 96.
