Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin agrum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin agrum (12th cent. in the source of quot. 1486), use as noun (short for morbum agrum acute disease) of agrum , variant (apparently after Italian agro (14th cent. in male agro acute illness, in an Italian translation of the source of quot. 1486): see agrodolce adj.) of acrum , masculine accusative singular of classical Latin ācer sharp, acute (see acrid adj.).

A disease affecting hawks, apparently characterized by the discharge of fluid from the beak and eyes (not identified; perhaps some form of upper respiratory infection).In later quots. historical, esp. with reference to the source of quot. 1486.
