Etymology: < French -phobe (formations in which are found from at least the first half of the 19th cent.) < classical Latin -phobus (in e.g. hydrophobus hydrophobe n. and adj.) < Hellenistic Greek -ϕόβος -fearing, -dreading (in e.g. ὑδροϕόβος hydrophobe n. and adj.), combining form of ancient Greek ϕόβος fear < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕέβεσθαι to flee < the same Indo-European base as Old Church Slavonic běgati, běžati to run, flee, Russian begat′, bežat′ to run, flee, beg running, run, Lithuanian bėgti to run, bėga, bėgis running, run, course, Latvian bēgšana flight. Compare German -phob (formations in which are found from the 19th cent.).Earliest in the French loan Anglophobe n. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 19th cent. A large number are formed from the names of peoples, as Russophobe n., Gallophobe n. at Gallo- comb. form1 2b.
