Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: cost n.3, -ful suffix.
Etymology: < cost n.3 + -ful suffix. Compare costly adj.Apparently re-formed in the 19th cent. Earlier currency (in sense 2) is perhaps shown by the following example, although cost n.3 is not attested until slightly later; it has alternatively been interpreted as showing an otherwise unattested derivative of cost n.2 in sense ‘fraught with hardships’ (compare sense 4 at that entry):a1325 (c1250) Gen. & Exod. (1968) l. 3880 Long weige and costful he ðor fond.
1. Expensive; sumptuous. Now rare.Apparently not attested in the 17th, 18th, or 19th centuries.
