Etymology: < scientific Latin costiferus (1813 or earlier as a specific name; < classical Latin costa rib (see costa n.1) + -ferus , -fera -fer comb. form) + -ous suffix (compare -ferous comb. form), after German rippentragend (1808 or earlier). Compare French costifère (1818 or earlier).
Zoology and Palaeontology. Obsolete.
Bearing a rib; articulating with a rib.
