Etymology: < corona n.1 + virus n. (for the semantic motivation for the coinage see quot. 1968).
Virology.
1. Any member of a group (formerly a genus) of enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses which have prominent projections from the envelope and are pathogens of humans, other mammals, and birds, typically causing gastrointestinal, respiratory, or neurological disease; (in form Coronavirus) the (former) genus itself. Also: any member of the family Coronaviridae (rare).The original genus Coronavirus was later divided into four genera, Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma-, and Deltacoronavirus.The family Coronaviridae includes the genera Coronavirus and Torovirus (which comprises a small number of viruses causing gastroenteritis in humans, cattle, and pigs).
