Etymology: < Arabic aḥmadīyya, collective noun < the name of Aḥmad al-Badawī (d. 1276), the founder of the order + -iyya , suffix (see mudirieh n.).

Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu aḥmadiyya.
Etymology: < Urdu aḥmadiyya < Aḥmad , male forename (see note) + -iyya ( < Arabic -iyya , suffix: see mudirieh n.). Compare Arabic aḥmadīyya (probably < Urdu). Compare earlier Ahmadiyya n.1The name of the movement is probably derived < the name of Mīrzā Ġulām Aḥmad (1835–1908) of Qādiyān in the Punjab, India, the founder of the movement in 1889, although it is also sometimes said to be < Aḥmad , a byname of the Prophet Muhammad. With sense 2, which is not paralleled in either Urdu or Arabic, compare Ahmadi n.
