Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian ahriman.

Etymology: < Persian ahriman the principle of evil (already in Middle Persian) < an unattested Old Iranian compound cognate with Avestan aŋra mainyu evil spirit < aŋra- , apparently ‘painful’ + mainyu- , apparently ‘anger’ (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as i-mind n.). Compare ( < Avestan) ancient Greek Ἀρειμάνιος (Plutarch; compare quot. 1603).

The evil spirit or principle in the doctrine of Zoroastrianism, the opponent of Ahura Mazda.
