Forms: Middle English–1600s as in counsellor n.; also 1500s–1600s councellour, councellor, 1500s– councillor.
Etymology: An alteration of the earlier word counsellor, through assimilation to council. When counsel (French conseil), in the sense of an advising or deliberative body, came to be spelt council, counsellor (French conseilleur) in the sense of a member of such a body was conformably spelt councillor.
