单词 aida
释义

Aidan.

Brit. /ʌɪˈiːdə/, /ˈeɪdə/, U.S. /aɪˈidə/, /ˈeɪdə/
Forms: 1800s– Ada (irregular), 1800s– Aida, 1800s– Aïda, 1800s– Ida (irregular). Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Apparently from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Aida.
Etymology: Apparently < Aida, the name of a character in an opera of the same name (first performed in 1871) by Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), or alternatively < the name of the opera itself.Although the chronology suggests a connection with Verdi's opera, the reason for this is now unclear. Possibly ‘Aida’ was used as a metonym for Egypt, frequently associated with the manufacture of cloth; compare Java canvas n. at Java n. 5. Compare also the following quotation, in which ‘Aïda’ seems to refer to the style rather than the material of the tunic:1876 Warehousemen & Drapers' Trade Jrnl. 13 May 215/1 This skirt is made in one with the bodice,..and over it is worn an Aïda tunic of the brocade. Ignorance of the origin of the word has given rise to the forms Ida (apparently after the female forename Ida) and Ada (reflecting a pronunciation /eɪdə/; apparently after the female forename Ada).
Needlework and Embroidery.
A loosely woven linen cloth with an even mesh, traditionally used in cross-stitch embroidery. Frequently attributive, esp. in Aida cloth. Cf. Java canvas n. at Java n. 5.
