Etymology: < French (now historical and rare) aide-de-camp (1577 or earlier in Middle French) < aide aid n. (compare aid n. 3) + de de prep. + camp camp n.2, with partial assimilation of the first element to aid n.In plural form aides-de-camp after the French plural form. Compare representations of the pronunciation of the word in various regional varieties, e.g. edge-a-gong (19th-cent. Irish English), aid-dee-cong (20th-cent. Irish English), aidi cong (20th-cent. Indian English), etc. N.E.D. (1884) also gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (e:d-də-kaṅ·) /ˌɛddəˈkɑ̃/.
Chiefly Military.
An officer acting as an assistant to a senior officer, or who assists on ceremonial occasions. Also in extended use. Abbreviated ADC (see ADC n. at A n. Initialisms).
