Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aigrette.
Etymology: < Middle French, French aigrette egret (see egret n.), also tuft of feathers used as an ornament (1532 in Middle French), feathery pappus of certain plants (1694), bundle of luminous rays (1746), any of various types of food or dishes which are given a feathered or plumed appearance (although this is apparently first attested later than in English: 1927 in une aigrette de sucre filé , or earlier). Compare earlier egret n.
